Summer's Cinematic Belly-Flop

Posted : 11 years ago on 7 April 2013 05:31 (A review of Club Paradise)

Appropriately enough, Club Paradise was released during the summer; July 11th, to be exact. Is it good? Well, not really. Is it bad? Personally, I don't think so. It's just mediocre at worst, average at best. At first, it's pretty straightforward: decent pace, beautiful scenery (oh yes!), and a couple of scenes I find somewhat funny. But then, somewhere between the second and third act, I get lost when the revolution mentioned earlier on was on the verge of starting. If you just want to watch something with nice scenery, well, here you go.

Is this completely forgettable?

Posted : 11 years ago on 6 April 2013 05:43 (A review of Head Office)

Remember Head Office? No? Well, either way, I'm still reviewing it. The plot involves Judge Reinhold's character recently started working at INC. At the time, he comes across his boss' daughter, who suspects that the company is in danger, or something; I can't remember. The only parts I could remember are Danny DeVito's character and ESPECIALLY Rick Moranis' character, but sadly, Moranis dies from stress, and DeVito commits suicide. Overall, except for those two characters, this movie is just forgettable.

How much do I earn for watching this?

Posted : 11 years ago on 5 April 2013 05:13 (A review of Brewster's Millions)

Walter Hill, usually known for exciting action-dramas that border on both gritty and cheesy, was signed on to direct the comedy Brewster's Millions, which was a remake of the 1945 comedy with the same name and plot, both based off of a book. A comedy classic? Yes, but I just can't wrap my head around it. In a nutshell, "Try to spend $30,000,000 in 30 days, but don't show any assets or splurge it all, and don't tell anybody about it. If you succeed, you get $300,000,000." Even though it's a classic comedy, it's rather easy to get lost in Brewster's predicament, so bottom line, I consider this a triple-C movie- classic confusing comedy.

One of the worst movies you have never seen

Posted : 11 years ago on 4 April 2013 08:00 (A review of The Wild Life (1984))

Luckily, I never watched Vanilla Sky, but unfortunately, I saw The Wild Life. Sweet merciful heavens, did I see this. I've never seen Fast Times At Ridgemont High either, but I bet I would actually like it compared to this, considering the impact of Fast Times. Remember in my Streets Of Fire review that I claimed that action movies weren't really my thing? Movies about sex are even less my thing, and this movie is a train wreck from beginning to end.

The characters aren't interesting; I found Chris Penn's character annoying, Jenny Wright's character seems too frigid, Lea Thompson's character should have not broken up with Eric Stoltz because she has bad taste in guys, Rick Moranis can't save this movie which is sad since he's my favorite actor, and the acting is very dull and more wooden than Plank from Ed Edd n Eddy. Is this the worst movie I've ever seen? Pretty much, but it could be worse than it is in the end.

Bustin' Makes Me Feel More Good with each viewing

Posted : 11 years ago on 3 April 2013 07:40 (A review of Ghostbusters)

In 1984, there were two horror-comedies that came out at the same time: Ghostbusters, which was directed by Ivan Reitman, and Gremlins, which was directed by Joe Dante. While both were successful, Ghostbusters came out on top for 6 continuous weeks. This might as well be Reitman's best directorial work here. All of the main characters are great; Peter with his wit, Ray with his pep, Egon with his "spores, molds, and fungus", etc. And another thing, this movie gets better the more you watch it. Every second, every joke, everything in it, gets better the more you watch it.

I can dream about something less disappointing...

Posted : 11 years ago on 2 April 2013 05:20 (A review of Streets of Fire)

Somewhere between Strange Brew and Ghostbusters, our little Canadian friend Rick is found, out of all places, in an action film, and while his first film was pretty good... Streets of Fire, by comparison, had a tough act to follow. Typically, movies like this aren't exactly my cup of tea (thanks a lot, X chromosomes), but this one really surprised me, and in more ways that one. HOW did this get a PG rating, when there's obvious violence, cursing, attempted rape, etc.? Not to mention that there was no blood until the climactic battle. Well played, MPAA of 1984.

The first half was really exciting, kinda funny, and you could get into it, but by the second half... climactic battle aside, it kinda leaves you a little empty despite a somewhat happy ending. The characters, meanwhile, vary. Michael Pare's character is supposed to be a typical action hero, but he is not without flaws. Diane Lane tries to put some effort, with varying results. Rick's character is kinda funny despite this being an "all-balls" serious action flick. Amy Madigan's character was really awesome in the first half, but loses what made her appealing to begin with in the second. However, the supporting characters such as the band the protagonists come across and the fan-girl played by Elizabeth "Buttercup" Daily are quite likable.

Yes, that's right; despite its flaws, I liked this. And I bet you will all feel the same way if you watched this.

This Was Shot In 3-B (3 Beers)

Posted : 11 years ago on 2 April 2013 03:33 (A review of Strange Brew)

You know, for the first movie that Rick Moranis, or Dave Thomas for that matter, have ever done, it's really good. Anybody who appreciates art would recognize this as the SCTV version of Shakespeare's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which is basically another version of Hamlet. The plot has a lot of meat to it for a comedy, and the comedy itself is so funny that I laugh like a hyena at almost every scene ("Two bowls of split plea soup to go."). I highly recommend this to Rick's fans, SCTV fans, and comedy buffs in general.

Yรป-Gi-Oh review

Posted : 11 years, 1 month ago on 23 March 2013 09:23 (A review of Yรป-Gi-Oh)

When this first came on the CW back in 2001, I wasn't really interested since it looked like a knock-off of Dragon Ball Z, but a few months later when I started watching this, it turns out not to be the case. What can I say about this show? Despite pushing cards from a game I'm not much great at, this is a show, to me, that had funny moments, deep storylines, and characters that are very sympathetic, and that makes sense since the franchise was intended to be about friendship.

Mr. Meaty review

Posted : 11 years, 2 months ago on 26 February 2013 07:49 (A review of Mr. Meaty)

How Mr. Meaty got greenlit I'll never know. I'll give it credit for having the guts to have "All of God's creatures" in the lyrics to what may have been the shortest theme song I've ever heard. The show, however, is generic with crude, bland characters I can't get behind.

Cat Soup review

Posted : 11 years, 2 months ago on 21 February 2013 07:17 (A review of Cat Soup)

This is a strange film. Basically, you have Nyatta, who has to save sister Nyaako's soul from Death, and some weird stuff happens like Nyatta deflating a cat woman while she was talking, a woman being sliced up at a circus, and a pig who nonchalantly eats a filet of himself with the protagonists. If you're looking for something different and strange, then I suggest this.
