An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 31 December 2012 12:18 (A review of An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island)

I don't care what a lot of people say, I thought that The Treasure of Manhattan Island was a decent sequel. Being animated by the Japanese company TMS helps.

My rating: 6/10

All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 31 December 2012 12:17 (A review of All Dogs Go to Heaven 2)

This movie continues from where the beloved original left off, with Charlie being in Heaven after sacrificing himself trying to save Anne-Marie, who is not in this film. Itchy does come back, just to die and go with Charlie on their next adventure, which creates a plot hole since dogs don't live as long as people, and the movie takes place in 1996 even though he would've died in the early 1940's. Plot holes aside, this isn't that bad of a Don Bluth sequel. It's nice, colorful, and cleans up some loose ends. Overall, I give it a free pass.

My rating: 6/10

Balto (1995) review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 31 December 2012 12:12 (A review of Balto (1995))

Ever since the time of Balto's release, I wanted to see it, but I was 4 years old and couldn't pronounce his name well yet. I eventually caught it, and the truth is, this is Amblimation's best film, so this was the company going out with a bang before becoming Dreamworks SKG. Sure, the movie deviates from some of the facts behind the 1925 sled race, such as the real Balto NOT being part-wolf, which I assume they made him as such to create conflict between him and Steele. But overall, it's a good movie.

My rating: 7/10

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:52 (A review of An American Tail: Fievel Goes West)

I'm not a big fan of the Western genre (except Back to the Future Part 3), but this movie wasn't bad or horrible, just cheesy.

All Dogs Go to Heaven review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:47 (A review of All Dogs Go to Heaven)

According to my mom, this was the first Don Bluth movie I've ever watched, but I don't know because my memories of the earliest parts of childhood are rather hazy. Casting Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise as Charlie and Itchy respectively does work, especially since the two of them were in the 1981 comedy The Cannonball Run. Charlie, despite his flaws, is pretty funny; Itchy is even funnier; Anne-Marie is the sweetest thing you'll see in this entire movie; and the visuals of Heaven and Hell are incredible.

Initially, this movie got the short end of the stick out of the 4 Don Bluth movies of the 1980's. Having been released at the same time as The Little Mermaid didn't help. But having watched this movie, I can see why it lost to TLM. I wanted to like this movie more than I do now, but there were a few moments where Charlie has gone too far, almost as far as the lengths that Bender from Futurama would go to, which somewhat clashes with the movie.

But overall, at least it's better than the next movies Don Bluth would've made after this one.

A strong piece of childhood nostalgia

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:36 (A review of Oliver & Company)

When Oliver & Company was re-released in 1996, I wanted to see it. I got the VHS, watched it, and loved every moment of it and watched it practically all the time growing up. This is Disney's most underrated movie ever. Nobody seems to know that it wasn't The Little Mermaid that was Howard Ashman's first Disney movie to compose, but rather, it was Oliver & Company, in particular, the opening song "Once Upon A Time In New York City", sung by Huey Lewis. The characters are pretty cool even though there's not much to some of them, the songs are pretty good, and overall, I would watch this again anytime after I make this review.

An American Tail review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:30 (A review of An American Tail)

Following the critical success of The Secret of NIMH comes American Tail, which was created with Steven Spielberg's help (protagonist Fievel was named after Spielberg's great-grandfather). As a result, this movie raked in a haul at the box office thanks to audiences that enjoyed it, but the critical reception from Siskel and Ebert was a little frosty. While carrying some of NIMH's dramatic tone to the point of bringing people to tears, it is balanced out with whimsical musical numbers and a few genuinely funny moments. Some Bluth fans say that the best film after NIMH is The Land Before Time, but personally, to me, it's An American Tail, for its realism and whimsy despite nearly the entire cast of characters being mice and cats.

Do you have the courage to find this gem?

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:23 (A review of The Secret of NIMH)

I kept hearing about how The Secret of NIMH is Don Bluth's best film, so one day, I sat down to watch it on Netflix, and... I got pulled into the movie. Besides E.T., how could nearly everybody not see this movie at the time of its release? This is INDEED Don Bluth's best film. Everything in it is perfect when it comes to the man himself. It's dark, but idealistic. It's intense, but it's heartfelt. If you haven't seen this movie, please find the time to do so.

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:19 (A review of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light)

I loved the anime so much, that I decided that I wanted to see the movie. It's... not as good as I expected. For starters, it's not canon, and second, they derailed Seto Kaiba's character. Is it an awful movie? I wouldn't say that, but it would be a guilty pleasure, even for the most die-hard Yu-Gi-Oh fans.

The Pagemaster review

Posted : 11 years, 4 months ago on 30 December 2012 11:10 (A review of The Pagemaster)

When I was a kid, I remember seeing a trailer for this movie. I eventually saw it after seeing the Nostalgia Critic's review of it, and I watched it, and... well, he was right about the part of this movie being a bit boring, but not entirely boring, and he got some parts of the message wrong. This movie is about becoming brave, which is what the timid Richard Tyler has to learn, so says The Pagemaster himself, played by one of my favorite actors, Christopher Lloyd.

On his quest, Rich comes across the swashbuckling Adventure, the sassy but sweet Fantasy, and the lovable cowardly doofus Horror, all 3 of them anthropomorphic books. The movie is fun and comical at times, but this isn't exactly a movie with the caliber of Disney.
